Who We Are
The Three Big Questions
You may be looking for a church for the first time in your life. Or, you’ve been following Jesus for many years and want to know if Refuge is for you. The Church is a family built on authentic relationships. Since relationships take time to build, we’ve answered a few questions about what we believe. Our beliefs shape who we are.
What do we believe about God
God is holy. The word holy means different or set apart. God is different than us. As our Creator, he alone is worthy to rule. Our culture is in a continual state of anxiety due to its desire to create a god that looks like us. The gods of our culture aren’t capable of solving our problems because they’re always changing. The God of the Bible is trustworthy. God is the same now and forever. He has the ability, willingness, and desire to address the problems of our world. He displayed this by sending his son Jesus. We are faithful to God and his plan for our life.
What do we believe about the world?
The world has purpose and beauty. Los Angeles is great at putting this beauty on display. Our geography and cultural diversity allow us to experience the world in one place. We also experience the world’s problems: poverty, gang-violence, oppression, exploitation, and the loss of dignity. Housing Projects and Coffee Shops both have pain. People are hurting, lonely, and anxious. Others are willing to do anything to chase the promise of success. Still, others are trying to survive. The problems of our world are a result of sin and distort God’s purposes. Jesus came to restore the world and we play a role.
